Oak Grove Baptist
Original Building
The Beckbe Baptist Association organized in 1816
included Monroe County the first and oldest association in Alabama later renamed Bethlehem Baptist Association which continues to be strong, active, and respected today. On land donated by John Wesley Broughton a church Oak Grove Baptist was built (1883)
first services guided by Rev. J.L. Eddins and Rev. Sam Jones
original building was set fire to curtail spread of disease
A second building was erected on the site cross from the present day parsonage
which was used until 1908.
Oak grove lived out the covenant by watching over each other in brother love, in addition to aiding the poor and needy.
Coming to the assistance of Howard college in 1869 when the convention needed relieved of debt the college which was founded in 1841 as an institution for men later become the co-educational institute of Samford University.
1897 - 1st Year of Sunday School 2nd Largest in Association under leadership of Mr. Lorenzo Wiggins
1903-1921 W.N Huckabee of Pineville Pastored for 18 years with brief interval in 1909 when L.C Dewitte served
1911 Oak Grove continued to help the poor and those suffering from 1907 Panic
1954 Mr. Fred Broughton grandson of John Wesley Broughton gave an acre of land for pastorium
1954-1955 Rev W.Q Howe aided in growth of church attendance, baptisms, and increasing of Sunday School attendance
1957 Oak Grove aided Assistance to the Indian Missions
1958 New Church Building / Sanctuary built A dedication ceremony with laying of the cornerstone marked the event that Oak Grove Baptist may reverence its cherished heritage its chief concern lay in serving the Lord today and in the future.
The church would not remain stagnant while country changes but will continue to meet needs of a fast changing society.
For over 120 years the members of the church has displayed constant devotion to our Lord, Our Southern Baptist beliefs and to the county despite adversity, war, depression, and apathy the flame is ever brightly snuffed and pray to continue to always shing bright for the Lord.
